According to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Research Foundation (NRF) and the Russian Foundation of Basic Research (RFBR) signed in Moscow on 25 March 2010, the parties invite scientists from both South Africa and Russia to submit joint research proposals. Specific areas of cooperation are:
- Fundamentals of nuclear and beam technologies.
- Laser technologies.
- Biomedicine and biotechnology.
- New materials and nano-materials.
- Astronomy research and space technologies.
- Platinum group metal chemistry.
- ICT.
- Earth sciences.
- Alternative sources of energy.
