South African ICSU Funding Guidelines

Announcement from the National Research Foundation

During the past, the ICSU granting process has been undertaken in an ad hoc format with members of various committees applying for travel or event support grants. The applications were manually processed by the Secretariat and captured in a template. However, the ad hoc granting process has had a number of challenges, including:

  • Poor planning (both technical and financial)
  • Reduced ability to improve performance of the Secretariat
  • A sub-optimal administrative management framework
  • Inaccurate reporting.

  In order to minimise and address these challenges, an online ICSU granting system has been developed and will be implemented for grant applications for 2015 onwards:

  • The first call will open on 1 December 2014 and will close on 15 February 2015. This call will be for activities taking place during the period 1 March to 31 August 2015;
  • A second call will be launched in June for activities taking place in the second half of 2015 – 1 September to 28 February 2016;
  • Unless otherwise specified, all grant applications should be submitted to the NRF electronically via an online application (to be specified in the call);
  • In ALL cases (and for those members not attached to an institution), please enter the contact details of your Head of Department and Chairperson of the committee;
  • For ICSU members at qualifying institutions the NRF Designated Authority (DA), need to sign off and validate the application, as per usual NRF application procedure.
