TWAS Fellowships

The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) has initiated various new fellowship programmes for PhD, postdoctoral and advanced research grants together with various countries in the South, including Brazil, China, India, Iran, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan, Thailand and Kenya. The fellowships allow scientists from developing countries to study or do research in other developing countries and return home to continue their careers. Please note that most of the fellowships are tenable at specific institutions in these countries.

It is important to note that applicants cannot apply for fellowships tenable in their home country, for example, an Indian applicant applying for a fellowship tenable in India will be considered ineligible, as will applicants already in the host country/having temporary or permanent residence in the host country/living in a developed country.

Further, the minimum requirement for the PhD programmes is an MSc and a PhD for the postdoctoral programmes.  The CSIR Fellowship in India requires the applicant to be employed.

The latest addition to the fellowship programme is the CIIT Fellowships (PG, postdoctoral and visiting scholar) in Pakistan.

There are no PhDs via correspondence available, but there are both full-time and sandwich PhD fellowships available in some programmes.

It is recommended that the applicant contacts potential supervisors in one or more eligible institutions and that a copy of the applicant’s CV and proposed research plan is sent in order to obtain preliminary acceptance. Only once the applicant has received the preliminary acceptance should s/he submit the application form, acceptance letter and all other required enclosures as indicated on the application forms.
