{"id":2227,"date":"2013-01-12T09:19:25","date_gmt":"2013-01-12T09:19:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/strategicpartnerships.csir.co.za\/?p=2227"},"modified":"2014-03-03T09:23:37","modified_gmt":"2014-03-03T09:23:37","slug":"transnet-taps-into-csir%e2%80%99s-research-capacity-and-engineering-know-how-11-january-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/strategicpartnerships.csir.co.za\/?p=2227","title":{"rendered":"Transnet taps into CSIR\u2019s research capacity and engineering know-how, 11 January 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"justify\">Transnet SOC Ltd and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) formalised a historic partnership on 11 February 2013 that will allow Transnet to tap into the CSIR\u2019s technological innovation and research capabilities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/intraweb.csir.co.za\/images\/IMG_2464_big.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"374\" height=\"270\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">CSIR Chief Executive Officer, Dr Sibusiso Sibisi and Transnet Group Chief Executive, Mr Brian Molefe formalise the partnership between the CSIR and Transnet<\/p><\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\">In terms of the partnership, Transnet and the CSIR will work together in identifying possible areas of cooperation and enter into specific arrangements in all areas of Transnet\u2019s operations. These include port, rail and pipeline operations. Ownership and other rights, especially intellectual property, will be negotiated on a project basis, depending on the work to be done. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Speaking at the formal signing ceremony in Johannesburg, Transnet Group Chief Executive, Mr Brian Molefe said: \u201cFor Transnet to play its rightful role in the economy, we have to grow, invest and modernise at an unprecedented rate. Therefore, we need to constantly explore innovations and technological advancements. We have that in abundance at the CSIR, an institution that has developed the expertise over the last couple of decades.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\u201cWith this agreement, we have given ourselves access, not only to decades of the knowledge we need, but to a body of specialised skills that the CSIR has at its disposal,\u201d said Mr Molefe.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Transnet is about to enter into the second year of its rolling seven-year Market Demand Strategy, which entails a huge improvement in its operations, including its capital investment programme, volumes, operational efficiencies and safety levels.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">CSIR Chief Executive Officer, Dr Sibusiso Sibisi said: \u201cThis partnership is an excellent opportunity for the CSIR to provide comprehensive research and development support to a pivotal state-owned company such as Transnet. Supporting industry is in keeping with our mandate.\u00a0 We are excited to be part of a series of projects that, apart from benefiting the sophistication and modernisation of Transnet\u2019s operations, will assist in job creation and growing South Africa\u2019s economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 348px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/intraweb.csir.co.za\/images\/IMG_2472_big2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"338\" height=\"225\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The CSIR&#39;s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Sibusiso Sibisi and Group Executive: Strategic Alliances and Communication, Dr Rachel Chikwamba with Transnet&#39;s Group Chief Executive, Mr Brian Molefe and Chief Executive: Transnet Freight Rail, Mr Siyabonga Gama<\/p><\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\">In addition to the company\u2019s five operating divisions, the partnership will augment Transnet\u2019s own in-house engineering and project management unit \u2013 Transnet Capital Projects, which manages Transnet\u2019s mega projects.<br \/>\nTransnet and the CSIR have started work on the following areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Infrastructure, including rail, port and coastal engineering, roads and buildings;<\/li>\n<li>Rolling stock, including energy efficiency, alternative fuels and energy regeneration;<\/li>\n<li>Operations \u2013 water use, waste management systems, logistics supply chain, greening, climate change, sensor tracking and automation as well as safety and security; and<\/li>\n<li>Strategic decision support which looks into planning, environmental management system and enterprise engineering.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"justify\">Transnet has previously used the CSIR\u2019s services on various specialised projects including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Monitoring of the quality of water in all ports<\/li>\n<li>Ports maintenance dredging support at the Port of Durban<\/li>\n<li>Marine life monitoring at all ports<\/li>\n<li>Waste water monitoring for the Durban-to-Johannesburg fuel pipeline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"justify\">\u201cThe CSIR\u2019s expertise will be relevant and appropriate in various areas of our operations.
