The delegation was welcomed by CSIR executives, led by CEO Dr Sibusiso Sibisi,\u00a0 who lauded the commitment from members of both organisations in crafting the strategic partnership.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Berenice Lue Marais from the CSIR Strategic Alliances office indicated that, \u201cThe purpose of the visit was to give TRE representatives an opportunity to meet some of the CSIR\u2019s top experts, as well as show them the organisation\u2019s various competencies and R&amp;D facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Giving an update of the progress of the partnership thus far, Lue Marais reported that a steering committee \u2013 led by Dr Rachel Chikwamba, Group Executive: CSIR Strategic Alliances and Communication; and Sugen Govender, TRE General Manager: Business and Product Development \u2013 has been set up to manage the relationship. The management and technical oversight committees, which are jointly chaired by CSIR and TRE representatives, are also functional.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">To date, the technical opportunities that have been selected by the TRE for further development are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>R&amp;D roadmap and R&amp;D planning<\/li>\n<li>Technology assistance programme (supplier development)<\/li>\n<li>Advanced manufacturing support<\/li>\n<li>Condition monitoring of rolling stock and ICT diagnostics (telemetry to central system)<\/li>\n<li>Foundry benchmarking and foundry technology assistance<\/li>\n<li>Collaboration on mechanical testing<\/li>\n<li>Regenerative braking system (including storage devices)<\/li>\n<li>Power electronics<\/li>\n<li>Transnet production system modelling and simulation<\/li>\n<li>Pipeline infrastructure condition monitoring devices<\/li>\n<li>Electric and mechanical R&amp;D support (future projects)<\/li>\n<li>Advanced materials\/nanotechnology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table width=\"20%\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"5\" cellpadding=\"5\" align=\"left\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">\n<p><div style=\"width: 343px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.csir.co.za\/images\/IMG_%20264.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"250\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Richard Vallihu, TRE Chief Executive got a hands on experience during their tour of the CSIR National Laser Centre<\/p><\/div><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>\u201cThis list clearly captures the depth and strategic nature of the partnership which we\u2019re all committed to,\u201d said Sibisi. Indicative of the spirit that the relationship has been conducted in, he said he hoped that \u201cour Transnet friends will enjoy the visit as much as we enjoyed the tour at Transnet at Koedoespoort\u201d.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>A meeting of great minds<\/strong><br \/>\nTRE\u2019s Chief Executive, Richard Vallihu, conveyed his team\u2019s excitement about getting to fully understand the CSIR\u2019s capabilities, adding that they appreciate the support they have received from the CSIR in the pursuit of expanding their industrial base.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">It was certainly a meeting of great minds when the TRE team interacted with various experts in the CSIR to get a better understanding of the work that they do. The tour kicked off with Dr Liesbeth Botha, Executive Director: CSIR Materials Science and Manufacturing and her colleagues showcasing light metals manufacturing; nanotechnology; and sensor science and technology capabilities.<\/p>\n<table width=\"20%\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"5\" cellpadding=\"5\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\">\n<p><div style=\"width: 343px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.csir.co.za\/images\/IMG_%20082.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"250\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The delegation watches a CSIR Materials Science and Manufacturing demonstration on light metals manufacturing<\/p><\/div><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p align=\"justify\">This was followed by a trip to CSIR Modelling and Digital Science, where Executive Director, Dr Motodi Maserumule and his Mobile Intelligent Autonomous Systems (MIAS) colleagues gave demonstrations of some of their projects.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Laser-based manufacturing was also on show when Dr Ndumiso Cingo, Centre Manager: CSIR National Laser Centre and his colleagues gave the TRE team demonstrations of the Centre\u2019s capabilities.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">\u201cWhat you do here is unbelievable,\u201d said Vallihu. \u201cIt\u2019s not just about the R&amp;D, but also the applications. There is great synergy between our organisations and I believe that we are on very good footing.
