The CSIR and Eskom progress on areas of cooperation

The CSIR/Eskom Steering Committee meeting was held on 22 February 2011 at the CSIR Knowledge Commons where both parties, led by the respective team champions, provided feedback on progress with their research cooperation areas. These include:

  • Storage of energy
  • Demand management
  • Renewable supply side options
  • Solar thermal energy
  • Climate change
  • Smart grids
  • Water
  • Energy technology roadmaps and foresight.

There were also three mini exhibits of projects where the CSIR and Eskom have cooperated successfully. These are:

  • The South African Risk and Vulnerability Atlas (climate change). More.
  • CoroCAM (Materials Science and Manufacturing). More.
  • The Advanced Fire Information System. More.

Berenice Lue Marais, Group Manager: CSIR Contract R&D and International Funding Streams says, “The Eskom steering committee is pleased with the progress thus far and our next meeting in April, which will take place at Eskom’s Megawatt Park, will seek to scope the areas of collaboration.” The CSIR and Eskom signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in October 2010.
