CSIR and Uganda Industrial Research Institution bilateral agreement moves forward

Prof Charles Kwesiga presents Dr Rachel Chikwamba with a framed picture of the CSIR/UIRI MoU signing by CSIR CEO Dr Sibusiso Sibisi and Prof Kwesiga overseen by President Jacob Zuma and President Yoweri Musoveni.

The CSIR hosted a delegation from the Uganda Industrial Research Institution (UIRI) from 14 to 17 February 2012. Members of the UIRI delegation were Julian Mwesigye, David Ilukol and Dr Charles Kwesiga. This is a follow-up meeting to the bilateral agreementthat was signed between the CSIR and UIRI in January 2011.

CSIR Strategic alliances manager, Berenice Lue Marais says, “The purpose of the visit was to provide an update regarding the progress that was made in targeting funding institutions in both countries. Such funding is aimed at providing financial support for proposals that the CSIR and UIRI have identified for support as reflected in the bilateral.”

The four proposals that have been agreed on to date by the CSIR and UIRI are:

  • Creating an essential platform in Uganda;
  • Extraction of essential oils and bioactive ingredients from biomaterials;
  • Enterprise development in Uganda; and
  • Feasibility study on waste tyre recycling.

The delegation also toured the CSIR Biosciences facilities, and visited the CSIR National Laser Centre and CSIR Enterprise Creation for Development sites where work on essential oils is taking place.

In addition, UIRI now wants to conduct a pilot study on the cultivation of essential oils, to precede the initial four proposals.
